SITS Fencer Wins High School State Championship
(2019-03-10)—Congratulations to Alex W. who went undefeated on March 10th at the High School State Individual Fencing Championships to become the 2019 Women's Epee State Champion representing Norwich Free Academy. Also medaling at the championships were Raven (6th place) and Edward (7th place) in Men's Epee. Liam H. had a strong finish in 9th place, followed by Kameron (11th place Men's Epee). Other strong finishes were earned by Jade (15th in women's saber), Alex B. (17th Men's Epee), McKenna (22nd Women's Epee) and Duncan (23rd Men's Epee). In all, more than a dozen SITS fencers competed in the championships representing school and homeschool programs across Eastern CT.
SITS Fencers Head to Junior Olympics
(2018-12-20)—Three SITS fencers will be competing in the USFA Junior Olympics in Denver, CO in February. Alex Wicken, Raven Belliveau, and Liam Hanrahan each qualified to compete in their age categories for the 2019 Junior and Cadet epee events. SITS High Schoolers Compete In State Championship
(2017-04-01)—On March 3, fencers from SITS competed in the CT State High School Fencing Individual Championships at Hopkins School in New Haven. Eleven fencers competed as part of the SITS High School Team, while several others competed with their own high school's fencing team.
Leading the boys was Raven Belliveau, taking 6th in the Men's Epee competition. It was Raven's first year competing in the tournament. Sierra McElroy led the SITS team girls, finishing 11th in Women's Epee. The top placing SITS fencer for the day was Alaina Sminkey, who took the bronze medal for Women's Epee. During the high school season, Sminkey fences for the Norwich Free Academy Fencing Team with Coach Scott Provost.
The SITS High School Fencing program is a 3-month program designed specifically for high school-aged fencers who do not attend high schools with fencing teams. The program encourages team spirit and comradery while emphasizing specific skills and strategies for higher-level competition.
